Satellite Tag GT-1100 Battery Issue
Problem: The version of firmware on these devices has an issue where the processor checked the battery voltage provided by the solar panel instead of the battery, giving the processor a false impression that the battery had sufficient capacity to operate. This caused the device to shut down before completing its boot cycle and it was not able to recover on its own.
Solution: To avoid this issue in the future, the bootloader and application firmware should be updated to the latest version which has incorporated fixes for these issues. Units currently in production have the current firmware and will avoid this issue. This version of firmware has been released for nearly a year.
Plan of Action: Unfortunately, the bootloader needs to be updated locally. For cost and expediency purposes, we recommend the Navy open a support ticket at Caution-www.savi.com; the customer will be instructed to ship the units to ORBCOMM so they can update the firmware and charge the batteries, then return them.

ATTENTION
The traditional Handheld Terminal (HHT) form factor devices available on the AMIS contracts are fully functional and operationally sound. Prior to finalizing a procurement action customers are recommended to verify that the devices and associate software may be used in their environment and technical architecture. There is a change in DoD policies that may impact the ability to use these devices in some environments. DoD had mandated the use of Windows 10 Operating System by January 31, 2017, this has been extended to January 31, 2018. Existing devices cannot use WIN 10 and there are other potential impacts. See below notices.
Notices
- The HHTs use Windows Embedded Mobile Operating System version 6.5.x. The Operating System cannot be updated to Windows 10, nor will it support SHA-256 CAB-signing certificates. If devices are used in a closed loop (standalone) environment and accreditation aspects are not needed there may not be an impact.
- Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) offers device management and data synchronization between a Windows Mobile-based device docking station and a workstation. WMDC support ends July 2017; there is no replacement available. Product OEM support is being sought to continue use.
- Symantec Mobile Security 7.2 (anti-virus software for Windows mobile devices) will end March 2017. There is no replacement available. The AV software is not provided with the product offering but frequently used as a free download from CHESS. If devices are used in a closed loop (standalone) environment and accreditation aspects are not needed there is may not an impact.
Tablet form factor devices (with imagers) and scanners are available on the AIT-V contract as a potential alternative to the HHTs. Tablet devices operate using the Windows 10 operating system.
